Artist Statement
I generate lyrical and unexpected juxtapositions of ambiguous images that are layered on the canvas with swirling, fluid flows of flat and textured paint. Lines, colors, and forms merge to hide and reveal figures and landscapes, gravitating towards and around each other, all the while generating new perceptual possibilities for both myself and the viewer.
During my painting process, I engage with and combine my feelings and imagery from my dreams and memories, along with nature, art history, poetry, and photographs encountered in books and world culture magazines, and even in social media. My paintings present an aesthetic and metaphoric exploration of how our sensory perceptions shape our experience of our environment, leading us to become aware of complex interconnections, correlations, and congruences. Part of my artistic research has consisted of examining perceptual phenomena such as pareidolia and synesthesia as well as the emotive impact of poetry and dreams before and during my painting process.
In a time when rapid technological advancement is changing the ways in which we interact with and engage our surroundings, my work invites the viewer to an ongoing, evolving perceptual experience.
